There have been lots of new and exciting changes at Crema Design, one being the new “Foscarini Wall” in the showroom. Given that they are an iconic Italian lighting manufacturer, we decided to design a dedicated wall just for Foscarini and Foscarini Diesel lighting. After researching the many ways in whichFoscarini have displayed their lighting over the years we decided to use wood panelling as the back drop for the many beautiful lights we already had in the showroom and all the new lights we then imported.

One of the Foscarini pendants in the showroom is the Aplomb - a small hanging lamp in concrete offered in three, coloured finishes which celebrate its personality, bringing together different styles, from the traditional grey of cement in its raw state, which adds depth to the volumes, to a stylish white hue, and a warm intense brown. Perfect for occasional tables, peninsulas and counters, either on its own or in a group.

The Binic is a table lamp with an ABS base and polycarbonate projector. Available in six different colours, Binic is suggested as a “take away” object - a present, or a personal object of desire - thanks also to the special packaging.

The Big Bang is one of our favourite suspension lamps. Made of intersections of white or red metacrylate panels the Big Bang is a dynamic composition that offers diffused and reflected light. It looks spectacular at dusk or dawn.

The iconic Twiggy lamp is available in four chromatic colours; black, white, red and yellow. The shade is made of a compound material and is anchored on a lacquered glass fibre base. The Twiggy comes as a table lamp, floor lamp, ceiling light and suspended pendant.

The Foscarini Diesel range is an industrial, quirky and creative range of lighting.

The Cage Pendants have an “underground” origin in the real sense of the word. They were inspired by the lamps of miners and workers, protected by a metal cage which in Cage becomes a decorative element, thanks to its artisan craftsmanship, which can be seen in its irregular structure, and the colours that characterise it. Glamorous white, fashionable black or pop light-blue: three colours that change according to the use of the lamp, lighting up a space when it is switched off, or taking on completely new shades when it is turned on. Cage is a personal object that will satisfy all your desires.

The table version has the total versatility of building site lamps: it can be hung, moved or placed on any surface or on the floor, or it can become an ironic desk lamp, which plays on its resemblance to a microphone.

The Pett's diffuser evokes the wings of a bat, the roof of a Gothic building or the atmosphere of a dark-natured comic book. Friendly, yet holding an expression of cutting wickedness, emphasised by the spikiness, by the veining in relief, the striped rubber feet and the interplay between the opaque and shining surfaces, in dark, technological shades. An irresistible amusing cult object for new generations, an original expression of contemporary pop culture, accessible to all, to be exploited in total freedom – as a faithful room mate or unconventional gift idea.

The Fork lampshade is inspired by casual fashion, by campsite tents and by an informal, playful and dynamic lifestyle. The stitching on the fabric has been created like that on jeans and the rings are not merely decorative, but respond to practical needs with simplicity and immediacy.
The light inside reveals a patchwork structure and the texture of the canvas, a little like when you turn on a light inside a tent. The lampshade is extremely flexible and can be oriented 360°. Its stand is also very mobile, thanks to its joints: this means you can change the direction of the light as you please, play with the lamp and have fun continually finding new positions for it. We see all of Fork’s dynamism carried forward to the new hanging versions too, available in both large and small versions. The warm light of Fork is perfect for the home, but is also ideal for public spaces where a relaxing atmosphere is desired.

Glas takes on the familiar image of industrial lamps used in warehouses and factories worldwide. A reinvented icon in the light of a new contemporary lifestyle, transformed into a precious and personal entity, transported into a timeless dimension.
By day, by night: Glas is a lamp with a double life. When it is off, the superficial chrome-coloured vacuum metallisation finish reflects the surrounding environment and objects like a mirror. When it is on, it emits a warm beam, with a retro feel, which is both directed and diffused.
Large or small, suspended on a chain, Glas transforms a home or public environment into a creative laboratory, a fascinating workshop of new trends.

Like a volcanic rock that when it breaks apart reveals a jewel within, Rock is an interplay of surprises and contrasts. Mysterious and severe outside, diamond-bright and iridescent inside. Outside, the dark version is rough with a scattering of golden motes, whilst inside, it shimmers, smooth and mother of pearl-covered. The white version assumes a new personality to fit in with each different use, a precious stone that highlights in particular its asymmetric facets, evolved according to a casual logic. They reflect the light’s rays in the internal surface as in a crystal, producing a surprising and unforgettable effect. This is an object that does not go unnoticed from any point of view.
The hanging version focuses its light on the space below, while the new floor version, of surprising proportions, can focus its light band to function as a reading lamp as well as sending light upwards. Rock is a striking component of public or domestic furnishing. Its light focuses on the space below, highlighting it. Whether alone or in a group, it is always a protagonist, but its presence is never invasive or excessive.

With a bold, linear outer form and soft curves inside, the NUBE is a cosy curved nest, perfect for the human body. Instead of a solid block, the design of the NUBE allows us to see all of the chair's structure and interior form. You really must sit in the NUBE to understand what a comfortable design this is.

The frame of the NUBE is made of solid steel in a shiny chrome finish. The frame is lightweight and elegant; it also allows for easy cleaning as the base is open and accessible from all sides.

The outer lines and inner curves are visually enhanced by the use of two colours in the upholstery. The removable seat pad is always upholstered in the same fabric as the curved seat.

the NUBE is suitable for residential and commercial use. Style your lounge with two NUBEs next to your sofa or place an individual NUBE as an accent in your bedroom or entrance hall.

The NUBE has been designed with a metallic linking system which attaches one chair to another. Given the square form of the NUBE, many combinations of shapes can be created making it ideal for reception areas.

Metamorphosis: an unforgettable concert of light at Fuorisalone

7 models from the Foscarini collection, 464 lamps deconstructed, repeated, reinterpreted and reconstructed in 22 surprising creations. More than 110,000 visitors admired the unforgettable light concert. These are the figures of Metamorphosis, the installation that marked Foscarini’s presence at Fuorisalone 2011, presenting the metamorphosis of an industrially-produced product into large-scale light scenery.

Tom Dixon Etch

Etch launched as part of Flash Factory, at the Tom Dixon stand in Salone Del Mobile, Milan 2010. The digitally manufactured collection includes this pendant light etched from brass as well as a candle holder.

Made by employing an industrial process used to produce electronic products, including circuit boards, the method allows for intricate detailed patterns to be cut directly onto the metal.

The geodesic structures are made up of sections of 0.4mm etched metal sheets inspired by the logic of pure mathematics.

The detailed pattern cast a mass of intricate shadows when lit.

Batch produced, Etch demonstrates Future Industry, where small numbers of high-tech products can be produced in greatly reduced time scales.

Li Edelkoort is well known through the Trend Union for the many trends and lifestyle seminars she gives to professionals in all industries all over the world. I was recently privileged enough to attend one such seminar at the Cape Town Convention Center.

There were many observations which stood out to me however I’d like to share the more visual ones. Firstly, which I found fun, yellow is the new pink, don’t forget it!

We will bring the outdoors in, making the connection more literal. Ceiling to floor wooden panelling is making a comeback, with very tactile surfaces being key.

Think industrial metals. Not too shiny metallics. Rust!

Lace, embroidery and woven grasses lend themselves to the concept that furniture needs to be lightweight and easy to move around.

The history of nanimarquina is based on a very clear idea: wanting to design rugs. It’s a simple statement, a transparent declaration of intent that has become a reality by putting into practice values such as observation, innovative endeavour, communication, emotion and knowing how to contemporise traditional craftsmanship.

Since its origins in 1987, nanimarquina has been designing rugs and other textile products, paying particular attention to research on raw materials and production processes. These factors enrich the aesthetic aspect of the products, which are the true stars that give the brand its visibility and commercial success.

Losanges | Searching for Originality

The Bouroullec brothers continue their study of simplicity and elegance with their new Losanges collection.

It’s about reinterpreting the traditional Persian rug using the ancient kilim technique.

Technically complex, the Losanges collection requires great skill as it involves combining 13 colours through the geometrical rhombus shape, a great challenge for the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan.

As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique colour tones to be highlighted which make each rhombus different and each rug a unique item.

Medina | Back to the Beginning

Inspired by old fashioned rugs, this collection, carried out using the kilim technique, recovers the essence of the rug, both in its texture and in its use.

For the desert nomads, a house is built on a rug, as rugs originally served to protect people from the ground. They represented an object of daily use, as well as providing comfort, they also defined the space.

Over time, the rug has become a decorative element and a vehicle for cultural messages. The Medina collection represents the modern day transformation of tradition. Its classical essence is achieved thanks to its handcrafted production in the north of Pakistan using a very old and traditional technique; the kilim.

Do-Lo-Rez | Level(s) in Tandem

Created by Ron Arad, Do-Lo-Rez is a union of two pieces, rug and sofa, conceived as a single element. Created jointly, they form an unusual project that brings the virtual world closer to the real world. Its name comes from the expression “do low resolution”.

The idea came to him after seeing a pixelated image in low resolution, which has materialised into a three-dimensional surface. The rug is made through the hand tufting technique, making each square a different height from the ones beside it.

On the other hand, its extraordinary format involves multiple vertices that seem like the final pieces of an unfinished puzzle. This game of volume and levels allows for made-to-measure, customized rugs.

Black on white | There´s always a reason to create, to laugh and to reawaken.

Faced with the challenge of blank paper, some authors capture its very essence on designer rugs. A graphic and industrial designer, a painter, a fashion designer and a writer and art gallery director create each of these four exclusive designs, in which four very personal visions of the rug as contemporary object are made clear. All have something in common: choosing the absence of colour, black and white in monochrome, to intensify its identity. A dichotomy. A horizontal canvas. A work of art underfoot.

MANUSCRIT Joaquim Ruiz Millet (2003)

In 1991, Joaquim Ruiz Millet started a novel that he would finish five years later. During his work’s gestation period, a page of the unpublished manuscript gave rise to a series of objects, such as this rug, with spindly characters that move the work plane from hands to feet. Expanding it, the original becomes the abstract.

We have just received stock of the original Bloom Pots!

The Dutch company BLOOM is a small team of designers, whose aim it is to put everyday objects into a new perspective. Bloom pot, designed in 2001 by Rob Slewe and brought into production in 2003, is an example of their aim. Since 2003 the collection has expanded substantially. The indoor/outdoor collection has increased with new models such as Bloom Pill, Bloom Bulb, Bloom Square and a special edition of the original Bloom Pot, the Bloom X-mas Pot. In 2008 the Bloom Portable Lamp was introduced.

The original Bloom Pot is designed so that it can be planted in. It is made of polyethylene with double walls which makes it waterproof. Bloom Pot resembles the stereotypical terra cotta pot and is available in 3 different sizes (40cm high, 60cm high and 90 cm high) and many different colours! It is ideal to decorate the exterior of your home, animate your garden or light up the parts of the house.

When you next drive by the showroom, be sure to look up to the balcony, we have the new Square Pots on display!

The Dock Kitchen - Tom Dixon

The Dock Kitchen is a well guarded secret, tucked away in the old Virgin recording studios complex, in a no-nonsense Victorian goods yard on the Grand Union Canal. Stevie Parle travels the world in a restless search for the best in honest, generous and simple foods, bringing them together to create a new kind of modern London cooking, and the adjacent Tom Dixon design studio provides a constantly evolving backdrop and a steady stream of innovative changes.

The 80 cover space has been designed by the Tom Dixon interior design company Design Research Studio and features furniture and lighting from their latest collection, Industry.

Each shade in the Pressed Glass collection is created by compressing molten glass into a hollow mould which is then annealed in a kiln to form a robust object. The production process does not allow for intervention, and so small variations such as tiny air bubbles often occur within the finished product.

The Bronze Copper Shade is a polycarbonate sphere, which is vacuum metallised with copper inside and brass outside to give a double colour effect. Available as a floor or pendant light.

A table inspired by the materials and processes employed during the Industrial Revolution. Screw is made from a cast iron tripod base with a white marble top. The aluminium thread allows for multiple heights by simply spinning the top.

A café chair inspired by the quietly pared down character of Japanese architecture. Peg is constructed from solid birch, making it light-weight yet robust. Easy to stack, it’s supremely functional shape pays homage to Rietveld.

The shared interest in best quality materials from all over the world makes Portobello Dock a unique and exciting place. The set up is simple. They cook a small daily changing a la carte menu at lunch and dinner, but in the evening we also run set menu supper clubs inspired by the season, an author, or a favourite place.

They now open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday and Lunch on Sundays.

Now all I need is a flight to London!

Random Lights from Moooi

The Random Light is the ideal ‘light’ solution to furnish any space. Developed around an inflatable beach ball, the Random Light is an outstanding example of a very creative, out-of-the-box production process which has generated an extremely successful product.

Designed by Bertjan Pot and introduced in the Moooi collection in 2002, the Random Light has become a best seller right from the beginning. It transmits a feeling of simplicity, softness, lightness and a touch of magic in contemporary style.
The production process is a special story by itself: a resin drained yarn is randomly coiled around an inflatable beach ball creating a translucent 3D fabric. The beach ball is then deflated and extracted from a round opening in the lamp. At the end the skin becomes the product, soft and magic.

In this new version of the product a LED pendant becomes part of the Random light, creating a long lasting energy saving light output. Combining a playful design with an environmentally friendly technology, a killer combination! The LED Random Light is available in a 50cm diameter or a 80cm diameter.

For the first time the Random Light stops drifting and comes down to earth…literally! It’s the first floor lamp available in the Random light family and the ideal ‘light’ solution to furnish any space. The base is made of matt chromed steel or a semi gloss powder coated base.

Fantasy House of Moooi at the White Building

Exactly 6 months after opening the doors to the Moooi & Senso showroom in London, Moooi take the unprecedented steps by inviting London based stylist Despina Curtis to curate her very own Fantasy House through the monochromatic world of Moooi at the White Building.

To celebrate this anniversary Despina creates a magical monochrome environment that combines the spirit of the building and the 10 years of iconic design from Moooi. The visitors will be invited to interact with a symphony of playfulness, illustrated through the exaggerated scale, mysterious shadows and familiar silhouettes within the theatrical set.

It also represents the perfect opportunity to introduce the newest Moooi designs to the UK, including the brand new facetted Miyake Floor and Table lamps by young Japanese designer Arihiro Miyake, based on a design that plays with very pure geometrical factors such as weight, surfaces and angles.

Other new designs in the spotlight are Random LED and Random LED

floor lamp by Bertjan Pot, Dear Ingo lamp in White by Ron Gilad and Raimond Zafu by Raimond Puts, part of a product line that has recently become Moooi's bestseller.

The presentation will comprise, amongst others, the soft and stylish Monster chair by Marcel Wanders and the exotic architecture of the Emperor lamp by Chinese designers Neri & Hu.

Moooi proudly share the showroom with Senso flooring and its beautiful, hand poured cast resin floors. The beauty and unique atmosphere of the showroom, including it’s great setting, continues to inspire and attract architects, designers, press, stylists and design lovers from around the world. All the more reason to share and enjoy this fleeting dream world at 'The Fantasy House of Moooi’.

Kate and I have been working on a very special new website aimed at showing you, the customer, what we have to offer! It is going to show you what projects we have been working on, as well as what exciting new products our suppliers have in store!
